Ken's 2010 Arizona Bear Jeff, I wanted to finally give you an update on my adventures of trying to harvest a bear from spring 2010. I must say they are very secretive animals that are hard to find. I hunted a total of 27 days during the spring archery hunt and was always a day early or a day late in seeing them. I tried everything from calling, tree stands in different locations and spot and stalk. I dealt with everything from deer flies, heat and excessive noise from quads. I am sure that didn't help. I only got 1 glimpse during this time and it was at 100 yards up on top. With my bow that didn't offer any chance. My cameras told me that they either knew I was there or my timing was off. I missed 1 bear by only 2 hours according to my cameras. Kind of frustrating but that is what hunting is all about. Nothing that is easy is worth it.
After all of the effort during the spring archery hunt I had to try during the fall general hunt with my rifle. Believe it or not I went out for 1 day and was able to harvest a very beautiful boar over the labor day weekend. The prickly pear fields are the way to go in the fall. I was out glassing for approximately 45 minutes and located him at 110 yards. I can only say that I was very excited and let out a huge yell. My adrenaline was flowing beyond belief. It was very surreal because I had put so much effort into the hunt I was in disbelief that I had finally harvested an incredible and beautiful animal. Attached are some photos of my bear. Sorry but they do have some blood in them and I had to combine 2 photos to get it all in because my camera messed up on me. Because of this I have purchased a new digital camera. I don't want that to happen again.
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the information that put me in the right area. I look forward to using your services in the future. Thank you and take care, Ken Turner
P.S. - AZGFD estimated him to be about 3 1/2 years old and weighted approximately 225 lbs. live weight. The meat is great and I am trying again for another one this year. What an incredible experience that I will never forget. |
