Merriam's and Gould's Turkey
The popularity of turkey hunting has exploded in the U.S. over the past 10 years. Although Arizona is not recognized as one of the super turkey hunting states like Missouri, Iowa, or Mississippi, it does have a growing population of Merriam's turkeys and a small but expanding flock of Gould's turkeys.
Arizona has two turkey seasons, one in the fall and another in the spring. The limit is one turkey per year, so if you kill a turkey during the spring hunt you can not legally hunt during the fall season Merriam's turkey's are usually more vocal and less wary than the the typical Eastern bird. They will often respond to a shock call such as a coyote howl or owl hoot. This makes it easier to locate a gobbler in the vast Ponderosa pine forest that they prefer. All firearm turkey permits are issued by drawing. There are unlimited over the counter permits for the fall archery only season. If you would like to hunt Merriam's turkey in Arizona, give us a call or send an e-mail and we can discuss your hunt. We will be booking scouting trips for turkey as soon as the draw is over. Arizona is currently the ONLY state that offers a chance to hunt the Gould's Turkey. Call or e-mail us for up to date info on this great opportunity. The species is expanding it's range in Arizona with the help of the NWTF and the Game and Fish Department. It is been rumored that the number of tags for 2005 will be increasing.
